The art of bonsai is an ancient practice that dates back more than 2000 years. It involves miniature trees and shrubs that are made to look like mature specimens through a variety of training techniques. It can be a very relaxing hobby and it also is an excellent way to unwind and de-stress. It’s also a great opportunity for couples and groups to bond and create something together that they can treasure.
The Central Virginia Bonsai Society was formed in 1986 and promotes the appreciation and enjoyment of this fascinating living horticultural art. The club is open to members and nonmembers who share an interest in the ancient art of designing and caring for bonsai. Those who are new to bonsai are encouraged to participate in the Introductory Bonsai Course which is offered in spring and fall. These classes are designed for students to develop their bonsai skills and gain an understanding of the cultural background and fundamentals of classical bonsai.
Students are encouraged to bring their developing bonsai for critique and training at the open workshops. These sessions are typically held on Friday or Saturday afternoons. The schedule is announced in advance of each event through the club’s monthly newsletter. Workshops are conducted in one of the greenhouses. To find the greenhouse, park on the street, enter the driveway and follow the 3 cones to the entrance door.
