Bonsai is the Japanese term for “tree in a pot”. Initially, the art of growing miniature trees in pots originated in China. These trees were seen as symbols of status in the Chinese society.
As Chinese horticulture increased, a new art form emerged. The resulting miniature trees were exhibited at formal shows. By the time World War II came to an end, the art had gained international popularity.
The first English language book about the art of Japanese dwarf trees was published in 1958. Today, twelve hundred books, magazines, and clubs are available in thirteen languages.
As the Artistic Bonsai Concours and other related events began to take place, the art of bonsai developed a reputation as a legitimate art form. Its aesthetic principles are similar to those of other established arts.
After the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, the demand for bonsai grew. Its popularity spread among hobbyists. In 1930, the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art began holding formal bonsai displays.
Thousands of specimens were shipped to the United States and Europe. A large display of bonsai was included in the International Exposition in 1970.
New techniques were introduced and workshops were held to spread the art. One technique involved wrapping branches with wire. This helped to create the minimalist look of bonsai. Another technique was to graft branches onto an existing tree.
