Bonsai norfolk island pines (Araucaria heterophylla) are a classic houseplant often used at Christmas time. The subtropical evergreen is tolerant of warm temperatures and dryness and will do well in almost any indoor location. However, it should always have access to good sunlight. If indoors, this can be through a southern window or grow lights. It can also be placed outside in high light for the summer, if weather permits.
The Norfolk Island pine has a softer trunk than other conifers and is therefore easier to prune. It is also resistant to most pests and fungus that commonly affect other Bonsai. However, it can develop root rot and leaf spot in the absence of humidity. This can be prevented by adding a layer of pebbles in the bottom of the pot to endure proper drainage and placing the plant over a saucer filled with water in the winter.
A standard houseplant soil mix is suitable for a Norfolk Island pine. However, it should be amended with a slow release fertilizer during the growing season to keep the plants nutritional needs in check.
The Norfolk Island pine is a great choice for indoor bonsai as it is tolerant of most conditions and is easy to take care of. It is especially suited to the formal upright and informal upright styles. This tree is also a good candidate for kokedama, where the roots are wrapped in moss. To keep the moss moist, simply resaturate it with room temperature water when it feels dry.
