Growing a tree from seed is a long process but can be very rewarding for those with the time and patience. Starting with a seed allows the grower to have total control over the growth of their tree for all its stages and can create something that is truly unique and artistic.
Bonsai trees are outdoor plants and most of the seeds found in bonsai kits are for species that live in temperate climates (the fir and pine) or tropical climates (flame tree and rosewood). Trees from these types of climates are not suitable for indoor cultivation and will require outside protection during winter.
A kit containing tree seeds will typically include standard seed potting soil for the seed to sprout and grow as a seedling before it is ready to be planted out in a larger pot and eventually trained into a bonsai. The seedling will need to be protected for the first few winters to ensure it can survive in a cold climate – a greenhouse or cold frame is recommended for this.
Most tree seeds will need to go through a process known as stratification before they will sprout. This simply tries to mimic the natural weather seasons that the tree seeds would experience in nature. For instance, maple tree seeds must be soaked and then placed in the refrigerator for a period of time that will vary by species.
The best way to obtain bonsai seeds is to shop around and find vendors that sell regular tree seeds and are also experienced in the art of growing bonsai. Arborists that have a brick and mortar store are the most likely to sell high quality bonsai seeds but many tree seed dealers are online now too.
