Bonsai Soil Mix
There are many factors to consider when choosing a bonsai soil mix. The most important one is pH. The pH of your soil indicates its acidity or alkalinity. A neutral soil has a pH of seven, while a more acidic soil has a pH higher than seven. Depending on the type of soil you have, you will need to add different ingredients to your mixture to give it the right balance of nutrients and water. Some nutrients are more available in an acidic soil, while others are more available in an alkaline one.
Another important component to your bonsai soil mix is horticultural lime. This is a great source of calcium and phosphorus for the soil of your bonsai. You can also add bone meal, which is an organic fertilizer that is mild to the plant. Depending on the type of soil you use, you may want to add more or less of each ingredient, depending on what you are comfortable with.
Other ingredients to consider in a bonsai soil mix include river rock and pumice. These are common ingredients in concrete and can be obtained from construction sites, building supply centers, and river banks. Just make sure that the rock is all rock, not a mix of cement and water. River rocks are one of the most appropriate soil mixes for bonsai trees because they are naturally acidic and pH neutral.
