LEGO has been promoting the Botanical Collection since early this year, and it’s clear that these sets are meant to be tended like real plants. This set is a perfect example of that, with interchangeable foliage and the ability to shape the tree. It is a great display piece for any home or office, especially with a matching pot and stand.
The build is relatively simple, with an elegant rectangular pot that snaps together in minutes and a slatted stand that also comes pre-attached to the trunk. The base includes a couple of rubber feet, as well as a 4×4 turntable plate into which the trunk clicks. It is a simple, yet thoughtful design that feels high-end and more mature than most LEGO sets.
In the box you’ll find two numbered bags of pieces, along with the instructions. The first bag contains the black base, one for the trunk, and the last three bags contain the green leaves and branches, as well as some pebbles for the base of the bonsai. The instructions are easy to read and very clear, and the whole build takes only about 30ish minutes.
This is a great set for anyone who wants to add a little zen to their lives, or just enjoys horticulture. The instruction booklet even has a little UCS-style intro at the beginning, explaining a bit about bonsai trees and how they are grown. And, in a nice move towards the company’s goal of using plant-based plastic by 2030, 3 of the elements in this set are made from sugarcane.
