Bonsai plants are a beautiful way to add a sense of tradition and elegance to any home, especially when they’re small enough to fit inside your aquarium. It’s not uncommon to see fish tanks filled with these miniature trees, but it’s important to understand a few things before you start trying your hand at this unique hobby.
The first thing you’ll need to do is prepare your bonsai tree for underwater life. This means soaking the wood for at least an hour to remove any excess chlorine or other contaminants, then boiling it. Boiling helps sterilize the wood as well as encourages the tannis in the wood to release faster. After that, simply placing your bonsai in a bucket of water with a rock on top to hold it down will make it waterlogged and ready for use.
When you place your new bonsai into your aquarium, you’ll want to affix it to the rocks using reef putty or aquarium safe silicone. From there, you’ll want to cover the roots with aquarium sand or gravel to add some texture and help it stay in place. Finally, you’ll want to add a little extra decor like some christmas moss or java moss to finish the look.
When it comes to adding plants to your aquarium bonsai, it’s recommended to stick with aquatic species that are easy to care for and look great in this type of environment. This includes Anubias, Bucephalandra, and Ferns.
