The Bonsai in the Karate Kid Movies

Bonsai has been a big part of the Karate Kid franchise since it first appeared in 1984. The movies are filled with wisdom that draws from Asian philosophy and teen angst. One of the most memorable quotes comes from Mr. Miyagi as he teaches Daniel how to form a bonsai tree. The quote is “Make like picture, just trust picture.” It is a classic lesson in vision and goal setting.

It is a lesson that will be resonating for generations to come. The film also features a lot of other interesting Bonsai and zen related themes. The first movie is a coming of age story about a young man and his relationship with his mentor. It also has some great kung fu action. The sequel is just as good and is a bit more sexy. The third installment is a bit less sexy but still an excellent martial arts film.

In Cobra Kai the Bonsai has a smaller role but it still plays an important one. The character Daniel LaRusso is a car dealership owner who has a passion for cars and also Bonsai. He even teaches his protege Robby Keene to trim Bonsai trees.

In the film he explains his love for the hobby by holding up this little juniper. The juniper is not a real Bonsai tree but it works for the film. In reality it is more likely a piece of wood with some twigs wired onto it.
