Succulents are a group of plants that require extra well-draining soil. They don’t tolerate waterlogged conditions like traditional potting soils and are prone to root rot if left in wet soil for prolonged periods. Using a specialized mix, such as bonsai jack succulent soil, reduces water retention and promotes drainage so the roots can absorb oxygen and nutrients.
Most raised outdoor soils can be used for succulent cultivation as long as they are not heavy clay soils, which easily saturate and rot in standing water. When choosing soil for succulents, look for a mix that is comprised of both organic and mineral components. Organic materials (like bark, shredded leaves, compost, or manure) provide nutrients while mineral constituents increase the drainage of the soil.
In order to improve the quality of your soil, you can make your own succulent potting soil mix at home. This is more time consuming than purchasing pre-mixed soil, but it can be customized to suit your specific needs and growing environment. Aim for a ratio of 1/3 organic to 2/3 mineral material.
For an ideal gritty mix, use coarse sand or gravel with a granule size between 1/8″ and 1/4″. Avoid using finer materials that can clog soil pores and hinder drainage, such as diotamaceous earth, chicken grit, and decomposed granite. The amount of sand and gravel should be adjusted depending on the climate and the type of succulent you are cultivating. For example, a mix with more sand will dry out faster than a mix with more gravel. Please note that soil ships separately from plant orders and does not count towards the free shipping minimum.
