For beginners, a good concave cutter and standard shears are a must have. These tools will allow you to properly trim your tree and make accurate cuts with clean, even edges.

A moisture meter is also useful for watering your trees. To do this, place a chopstick in the soil a few times each day during the summer months (less in the winter).

When you see that portion of the stick below the soil surface begins to dry out, then it is time to water your trees. A ball-shower or a watering can is sufficient for small collections, but for larger ones a garden hose with a sprinkler stick works best.
